March 2022

High Fat, Sugar & Salt (HFSS)
Supplier Briefing

What is HFSS?

HFSS relates to food and drinks which are high in fat, sugar and salt.
The government has made the decision to restrict unhealthy food promotions in stores from October 2022 as part of measures that are part of their strategy to tackle obesity and get the nation fit and healthy.

How are Co-op meeting this challenge?

We're helping our customers and members make healthier choices and supporting the HFSS regulation in England that comes into force from 1 October 2022.

This means that less healthy food products such as confectionery, crisps and sugary drinks will no longer be featured in key locations, such as checkouts, store entrances, end of aisles and their online equivalents, in medium and large stores in England.

It will also change the types of promotions stores are able to run on HFSS products by price, including multi-buy promotions (meaning the offer of a discount or special price for buying multiple items, for example, 3 for the price of 2).

The regulation is part of the government's measures to help reduce one of the biggest health crises that England is facing.

We wholeheartedly support the government's efforts to reduce obesity, and we'll help our customers make healthier food choices, starting by adjusting our displays in over 1,550 Co-op stores in England.

Part of this includes training to help our store colleagues understand why the changes are important and their role in supporting the rollout.

Co-op’s HFSS event

On 24 March 2022 we held a briefing for suppliers focusing on HFSS, the challenges it brings and the changes are making.

We are embracing the opportunity we have at hand to pivot our proposition to be the best offer it can be for our customers, communities, members, colleagues, and of course our supply partners. We will continue to work together to share HFSS ideas and collaborate further on opportunities.

You can watch the video of the briefing here which we hope you find useful.
