30 years of Fairtrade

Join Co-op in celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight from Monday 9 September to Sunday 22 September

This year’s Fairtrade Fortnight celebrates 30 years of Fairtrade. Driven by our passionate member owners, Co-op is incredibly proud to have championed the Fairtrade movement for 30 years, supporting trade justice through better prices, working conditions and terms of trade. As a co-operative, Fairtrade’s values and principles of fairness, democracy and justice match our own.

Co-op is proud to have played a key role in pioneering Fairtrade in UK retail over 30 years. Today, Co-op is the largest convenience retailer in the world for Fairtrade products and the largest Fairtrade wine seller in the world. Co-op is the world’s second largest retailer of Fairtrade products.

Why Fairtrade is important to our Co-op:

  • Three decades of standing with farmers and workers for fairer terms of trade, supporting them to improve their livelihoods and invest in their communities

  • Our Fairtrade commitment is core which is core to our Proposition as a business and essential part of our sustainability strategy to deliver for people and planet

  • At Co-op we believe Fairtrade is the gold standard of ethical and sustainable certifications. Fairtrade is more than a logo – it is a movement for trade justice. Through the Fairtrade standard, minimum price, social premium, producer voice and campaigners, it delivers a unique proposition and delivers substantial social value

  • Co-op leads the market in our Core 7 Fairtrade ingredient approach. 100% of Co-op cocoa (including as an ingredient), tea, coffee, bananas, bagged sugar, roses, South African wine are Fairtrade

While there is much to celebrate, the producers and workers who grow our food and drink face challenges greater than ever before. The world is facing a climate crisis – it is affecting the foods we love and the communities who produce them. But by choosing Fairtrade you can support farmers on the frontline of the climate crisis and help to protect the future of our food. That’s why Fairtrade Fortnight is such an important campaign to demonstrate our leadership, share producer stories of the impact it makes to communities around the world and encourage member owners, customers, and colleagues to choose Fairtrade.

This would not be possible without our supplier partners. There’s still a lot to do to overcome unfairness in the food chain, but together we can make a difference. It’s our goal to make it easier for our customer to support farmers, workers and their communities around the world who grow and produce ingredients for Co-op products, with every shop. Thank you.
